Robo Form Review Video

Jul 05

You may have noticed that one of my “Tools I Use” is Robo Form. It’s my goal to go and do reviews for all of those tools so tonight I thought I’d tackle Robo Form.

By the way, before we begin…you can expect affiliate links on this site to products that I recommend. My promise is that if I link to it that I have actually purchased it myself and used it and found it useful.

The other thing that I wanted to do with this review is to produce my first screen capture video. Like it or not video is the future on the web. It is just a way better form of communication than simple text [for most things anyways].

Without further ado here’s the Robo Form review video. I had a little problem with my audio so you’ll notice the sound isn’t perfect. But if you’re interested in business on the web, as you watch notice two things: the first is how cool Robo Form is and the second is how much more information that is being conveyed by a video than if I had written a review of the application.

You get to hear the presenter’s voice, which in itself gives you a lot of clues about them and I can say a lot in a few minutes of video and show you many pictures. Showing something is many times more effective than telling about it. Even for affiliate marketing this type of presentation could give you a significant advantage over you competition.

  1. Great video! I’m glad to see you educating people about the power of RoboForm. I’m surprised how many people I know who never use a password manager or AutoFill!

The biggest problem with RoboForm is that it only works on Windows. For those lucky enough to be on a Mac, they can use 1Passwd.

  2. Thanks David….I’m a Mac lover trapped in a PC world :)

  3. Great video Jon! You are a natural screencaster. I am curious what software you used to make it, and about the bandwidth considerations.

  4. Thanks Mike…all the details revealed in this week’s newsletter ;)

  5. Great review, Jon!

Working around keystroking apps is a killer feature for those of us who travel a lot and use public internet cafes.

  6. A free, opensource alternative is KeePass.

I do review of free and opensource softwares that I use in my business at FreeBizWare.

  7. Keepass is a nice little utility but password managers integrated directly within the browser take your online security to an entirely new level.

Look at how browser-integrated password managers protect you from phishing attacks. I get about 10 phishing scams in my inbox everyday — without something like RoboForm or 1Passwd, I could lose 1000′s of dollars just for one stupid mistake.

On another note, browser integration gives you unparalleled convenience. Look at how autofill and form fillers can be used to save your time.

My time is worth money, so I’m willing to pay for a product which saves me time; the fact that it makes me more secure too is a bonus too.

  8. Thanks for the review. I have been using KEEPASS and have recently given RF a test drive. Now it is time to buy license. I like the added convienience of RF over KeyPass but was wondering if the security was as good. I use a desktop and laptop so I was concerned about paying for multiple licenses. The easy solution was RF-USB.

  9. The security of RoboForm is top-notch. It allows you to chose the encryption algorithm, including AES, BlowFish, and RC6 – all are very powerful algorithms.

Re: multiple licenses, I was concerned about that too. The good news, afaict, the upgrades are free for life. 1Passwd chose a different licensing model; each single user license can be used on each of your computers, as long as you’re the only user of 1Passwd. Because of this, however, we do have a (greatly reduced) upgrade charge.

  10. Well done mate, very informative, dosent sound like your 1st time
    Cheers

  11. Really valuable – well done. Next time not quite so close to the mic.

    Excellent video.
I would love to see a video like this for every software package that I am considering.

  13. I love Roboform but it has one huge drawback for me.

First, there’s no reasonable way to reorganized bookmarks/passcards. I have hundreds of them and they’re seriously out of hand. I’d love to organize them into folders but Roboform support confirms that manually recreating them is the only way.

The capability to drag and drop folders in a Windows program has been around for ages and its absence in a commercial program is inexcusable.

  14. Finally got tired of Roboform. Have used it over the years and have bought several licenses. The latest roboformtogo would not let me reinstall without paying for it again so I switched to LastPass and am very happy. Could not live without a password manager now I have one everybit as good as Roboform for free. Just to be fair, I installed roboform 3 or 4 times on a flash drive either because I lost the drive, corrupted the drive, or recently accidentally wrote over it. Now, I no longer have to worry about having to pay yet again for a product I purchased once. Still a great product though

A bit off-topic, but… Most of my time is spent out in the South African veld (or bush) traveling, and so my reception of 3G (or better) is very rare. As a result, working with a GPRS Internet connection (EDGE at the best of times) watching a video or screencast is (almost) impossible since the download times are immense. While I appreciate the value of a visual presentation, I am somewhat perplexed by the assumption that everyone can use them. Unfortunately, that is something that is restricted to those that have the means. It would be an added-value to people like myself if the producers of high-quality presentations would provide a summary of the contents (perhaps the storybook?) as a text that accompanies the presentation. At an opportune moment (i.e. when a fast Internet connection is available) we could then go back to the presentation – but only if we feel it is worth while! Thank you for your efforts and sorry for the rant.

    • @Roland, in my defense, this blog post is 4 years old. The idea of browsing the web with a smart phone was not nearly as popular as it is now. Roboform is still great though, I still use it everyday.

@Jon, no defense needed. Being a 4-year-old post doesn’t change a thing. In South Africa (probably in many other developing countries as well), 3G/GPRS connections using a PC/Mac are state-of-the-art for many people. There is very little broadband in remote areas and connecting to the Internet is done using 3G (or less) technology. This has nothing to do with smartphones or changed habits – it’s the best we’ve got. I also read faster than I watch a screencast :) Roboform really is great. Thanks for your work.

  17. Both roboform and Avant browser are my old friends. I like using robform, although my Avant browser has a feature called autofills.
I’m happy roboform resolved the problem I posted about roboform and Avant browser & firefox.
