How To Be Wealthy in 5 Minutes

Have you ever met anyone who had a lot of money, but didn’t know how to enjoy it at all?

I know a few people who have a lot, enough so that they could easily live very well and never worry about money again, and yet they still either work at a job that they don’t like, or continue to run a business that makes them miserable.

The same goes for a lot of middle class folks who continue to put pressure on themselves financially just to have latest SUV or a gazebo next to the hot tub (which they pay $200 a month to keep warm and never use).

These People Aren’t Rich, And Never Will Be

No matter how much money they have in the bank.

These people actually piss me off. Money is completely wasted on them.

You’re probably agreeing with me, but would you really be any different?

Being Rich Happens Now, Not in the Future

No matter how much money you have, you’ll never be rich if you can’t be completely content with your circumstances right at this moment.

I don’t really want to get new agey with this topic, because I don’t think you can do gratitude, it is more heartfelt and graceful than a thought that is imposed onto your circumstances.

But I have found myself becoming aware, as I strive to build monetary wealth, that more and more, I am taking the time to appreciate the wealth that is already present in my life.

To Get Rich in 5 Minutes

All it takes is to sit down and really notice the things in your life that you really enjoy. In the last day, what touched your heart? It doesn’t have to be big or life altering, but take the time to notice it.

For me a partial list would be something like:

The list can and should go on and on. And it doesn’t matter how bad your current situation is, there can still be a long list. The fact that you are able to draw a breath of air is something to be infinitely appreciative for. That is the foundation of all wealth.

What I’m learning is that it isn’t more money that I really want, it the experience of more wealth and that experience is a lot more dependant on my way of being than it is on my bank account.

Don’t Live as a Want

When I was a kid I got so many gifts for Christmas that the typical response would be “what’s next.” Always wanting what’s next is like a drug.

If you pay attention, the next time you buy something that you think you really want, watch you emotions around it. You’ll start off feeling great and as time goes on the item you’ve purchased becomes more “normal” and doesn’t create any emotional response at all. Even something as bit as a new car only takes a few weeks to become normalized.

What happens then? We start wanting something else new! We need a new fix.

Pretty soon we can actually just turn into a want. Making money becomes about having an insatiable supply of better and better drugs to satiate the want.

If you try and get rich from this space you’ll never make it. You’ll never have enough money, because your wants will grow as fast or faster than your wealth.

The only way to really get rich, is to do it right now. Stop wanting and start enjoying live; as is.

I’ve realized that no matter how much I have, if I can’t be content with my current amount, or even less, I’ll never be happy or wealthy.

Dear Grasshopper Jon :-)

Get thee over to Amazon.com and obtain a copy of George Leonard’s “Mastery - The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment”.

George writes eloquently on “loving the plateau” - inspired by his experience and love for the martial art of Aikido. A great read.

regards

Very inspirational post. I usually think about the long term enjoyment of purchases so that I don’t get caught in the trap of spending money month after month on something who’s enjoyment is only linked to its newness.

I remember learning in business school that what people want, across the board, is 25% more than they currently have. If we define happiness as n + .25n, we’ll never get there. Gratitude seems to be the tool to defuse this no-win “equation.”

Mark, I prefer the martial art of listening to my own heart :)

Thanks Derek.

Angie, “If we define happiness as n + .25n” that’s an excellent equation! Sad, but accurate.
I’d love to know the context of what they were teaching in business school when you covered that.

It’s all about having the things that money can’t buy… I heard this recently in a Zig Ziglar speech. He said something like “you’ve got to have all the things that money can’t buy in order to have the things that money can buy.”

For instance,

Money can buy a house but not a home.

Money can buy a bed but not a good night’s sleep.
