Email List Tools & Notes

I think I’m finally getting it…that making money online isn’t all about AdSense! Okay I’m a little slow, but I see that the list is where real money is to be made. As my buddy Jscott says Adsense is like crack…easy to get addicted to but it makes you stupid.
Why take a customer and earn .50 cents from them and never see them again, when you can have them sign up for your mailing list and have the opportunity to sell them stuff over and over [the average newsletter signup stays on the list for 6 months!].
So I’m going to try some list building and I thought I’d throw my research online for all to enjoy. It’s not comprehensive by all means, I’m the kind that prefers to let my learning unravell as I do something, so this is all I need to get started, then I’ll post more as I get my own experience…so here goes.
Freebee Wordpress Plugins
Email Notification Plugin: Despite the description I know that people use this email plugin as a newsletter/mailing list application:
This plugin allows people to signup to be notified when a new entry is posted to your blog and once they’re confirmed it sends them an email every time a new entry is posted to your blog. It also allows them to unsubscribe if they wish.
Zookoda:
Creating professional, graphical emails using Zookoda is really easy. Simply enter your feed (RSS/Atom) address, select an email template and you’re done. If you need more control over your email design, Zookoda enables you to create your own templates, include images in your design and rearrange your content.
Buy it once email list software:
SonicMailer Pro is far more affordable than many other solutions. Why? Well, we’re not quite sure why everyone else is charging you so much, but what we do know is we won’t!
No monthly or per e-mail fees, ever!
Don’t get caught up in the others’ offerings! With SonicMailer Pro you will never have to pay any monthly or “per-newsletter” fees! SonicMailer Pro is a one-time fee and includes free updates for an entire 6 months!
Monthly fee model:

Okay you’ve got the software to create and manage your list…now what?
Brad Cullen has a pretty good free info course that covers all aspects of doing business online. His latest 3 part topic is email marketing. I found it worthwhile.
Now you may have heard the saying “the money is in the list”. Today, I’m going to start off with discussing what email marketing is all about and give you a basic heads-up on the subject. In the next two lessons, I’ll also discuss email marketing strategies and the tools (including a complete walkthrough) for setting up and managing your very own email marketing campaign.
I’m almost certainly going to start out with Zookoda. All things considered it looks like a good first choice. One thing you want to consider is who owns your list…meaning if you are unhappy with the list service or application can you take your customers and move to another list service. I haven’t checked out if any of these guys play like that, but you don’t want that…not at all.

You’re not alone Jon - I’ve only just realised this too.
Thanks for the resources. Yaro Starak also has written a fair bit of useful stuff about building email lists.
Thanks Jon. That’s great information.
[...] In a previous article I outlined some of the typical email list tools and mentioned my desire to begin learning the hopefully profitable practice of list building. A couple days ago I happened to be poking around in my hosting CPanel and noticed that within Fantastico there was a free PHP and MySQL based email list management program. [...]
